Water symbolically represents fluidity, or the ability to "go with the flow." When we experience imbalance in this element we might feel timid, fearful and "wishy-washy" at times, edema, scant or clear urine, heavy or sluggish feelings, bladder infections, insomnia all can be symptoms. The importance during winter to be in balance is primordial, as the water elements nourishes the next phase represented by wood (renewing) and associates with our bladder/liver function

Tips:
• Eat a clean and balanced diet (greens, root vegetables are great)
• Drink plenty of fluids – have a cup of calming caffeine free tea before bed, drink a warm glass of water upon waking up.
• Walk briskly at least 10 minutes a day or have a yoga session, swimming or walking breathing-meditation
• Relax and nourish your skin, body and soul
• Have a massage, facial or a spa treatment
• Read a good book – listen to one of your favorite classical music pieces
• Stay away from caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, refined sugars & starch.

During this period I like to treat my spa guests with a hot stone massage. Why?

The therapeutic benefits of a hot stone massage have been around for centuries. Ancient cultures and Native Americans used this technique to improve overall mental, spiritual, and physical wellness. Native Americans used hot stones to detoxify and to find harmony and balance. Today, hot stone therapy is used much in the same way as it was centuries ago and for the same benefits. One session can help you to relax, release, and rejuvenate. The therapeutic massage creates a sense of wellbeing. Insomnia is often cured through the use of hot stone massage because of its ability to put the mind at ease. Another benefit of hot stone massage is the feeling of spiritual wellness being achieved. As the warm stones relax the body, the mind is calmed retreating into a deep meditative state. In this meditative state your body becomes re-energized. The soothing heat therapy promotes a positive energy flow giving a sense of harmony and balance helping you to feel at peace. Receiving hot stone therapy is like going on an intimate, personal vacation. It is a wonderful Reconnecting with Your Self Experience.

In my palmtosole.com hot stone massage session, I incorporate energy healing through the specific placement of gems at different points of the body. This is done when you are the most deeply relaxed. It allows for the therapist and guest to balance deeply rooted annoyance. Some of my guests have said it is the most interesting and deeply connecting therapy they have ever received.

Palmtosole hot stone body massage 75min.
Palmtosole hot stone facial & massage 75 min.
Palmtosole body and mini-facial massage 90min.
Palmtosole hot stone reflexology massage 55min.

For appt. scheduling or to participate in one of our workshop, email me at: gabrielle@palmtosole.com

Reflexology

My clients often ask me what reflexology is and its benefits are. To start reflexology is not a traditional foot massage. Instead it is an alternative therapy and method that allows your therapist to target specific zones and areas in the body that need balancing. The therapist applies pressure using the thumbs & index/middle finger(s) in a walk like motion. This motion targets specific “pressure sensors” on the feet and hands. These sensors, in turn, are connected to different parts of the body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) attributes good health to the free flow of “qi” pronouced “chi” energy through the body along energy channels, or meridians, which begin and extend down to the feet and hands, and can be manipulated to ensure a well-balanced flow through pressure on vital points. The Chinese first began using the concept of reflexology roughly 5,000 years ago.

How reflexes work
Imagine stepping on a tack. In response to the challenge to the sole of the foot, a reflexive action occurs throughout the body – muscular action withdraws the foot from the tack and the body experiences an adrenaline surge as well as changes in balance and internal organ function. Reflexology works on the same principle – it all happens reflexively throughout the nervous system.

Who can benefit from Reflexology
Everyone can benefit enormously from reflexology. Reflexology can help relax you, alleviate symptoms of certain disorders, and generally improve your quality of life. This method is not recommended during pregnancy.

Why choose reflexology?
If you have pain, in general or from surgery or trauma
If you have trouble sleeping
If you have digestive and respiratory challenges
If you are anxious and depressed
If you need to relax

Can it hurt me?
Reflexology is very safe, but like any activity involving the body, if pushed to the extreme, excessive pressure can cause bruising. There may also be an overall body response to reflexology work (flu-like symptoms, aches, pains and tiredness) as the body attempts to release accumulated toxins. This should pass within one hour. A treatment should not be painful.

You too can have a reflexology treatment today.

If you have been experiencing any discomfort/pain in your legs & lower back, reflexology is for you. You can find a good cleanser at the drugstore for under $30. Avoid bars of soap as they tend to dry out the skin. Choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a clear cleanser if you have oily skin. Be careful not to cleanse too often, 2x a day is good.
Most women prefer the water method: Use warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser, then, rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Also do not forget to tone: toning has a great effect on the skin, which allows the moisturizer to really do it’s job. If you don’t tone, you are not maximizing the good ingredients of your moisturizer to work for your skin & obtain the results you are looking for.
Saving money Tips: wet your cotton pad prior to spraying toner on it. By doing so, the cotton pad is filled with water & the toner is on top so that it really works on your skin instead of being absorbed by the cotton. Result? Your toner will last longer.

Step 2: Exfoliate - Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice the difference almost immediately.
Saving money tips: use a tablespoon of fine sugar and 2 tablespoons of grape seed oil, gently exfoliate the skin, prep the skin with cleanser, so the skin is moist and slightly warm. You can find these ingredients in any good quality supermarket. No need to break the bank. For your body exchange sugar for salt since it is coarser and more invigorating.

Step 3: Moisturize - A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from it. (the only exception is acne skin). Why? Moisturizers seal moisture into skin. So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you. When your skin is tight, it's crying out for moisture. Be careful not to over moisturize -- this can clog pores. If you need help in selecting the right moisturizer for your skin, email me so I can make my recommendations based on your skin type and needs.

Are eye creams necessary? Well maybe. Some beauty experts strongly recommend eye creams. Why? The skin around the eye contains no fatty tissue and is therefore very thin and susceptible to wrinkles. Special eye creams are formulated to "thicken" this area. Yet other experts (including the beauty editors of Allure in their new book) claim your daily lotion works around the eyes just as well.

Step 4: Apply Sunscreen - 'O' magazine ran an article featuring interviews with several top skin care experts and dermatologists. Every single one of them said sunscreen was the most important part of your skincare regimen. It was the secret they would pass on to their daughters.

The number 1 cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it's important to use sunscreen from your early years on, even in winter and on cloudy days. A great trick is to purchase a sunscreen and not a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it. Your sunscreen needs to sitt on the skin, your moisturizer needs to nourish the top layers of the skin, so why use a sunscreen that will be absorbed by the skin? If you decide to purchase a cream with a sunscreen in it then have two moisturizers: one for night and one for day that includes UV protection. Don't use moisturizers with sunscreen at night, the ingredients are not meant to be used 24/7 and can aggravate skin. When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it contains Mexoryl (found in La-Roche Posay) or Helioplex, found in Neutrogena products or micronized transparent zinc found in Skin Ceuticals.

Voila, I hope you are enjoying these basic simple steps of taking care of and loving your skin. The results will pay off.

Namaste,
Gabrielle

women in healing - breast cancer awarness

Skin care for Women In Healing.

October is all about breast cancer awareness.

I was amazed to learn how few spas are really engaging in supporting this noble cause and if they do how little they do with it. Besides contributing to different organizations (and yes that is important), most spas do not offer core value treatments or services catering to any shades of pink what so ever, not even in NYC or LA!!!! Unacceptable, especially when considering that this is the one spa guest that really needs all the TLC in the world during their 10 to 12 month path of therapy.

After being dumbfounded by this fact, I stopped pondering and rolled up my sleeves. With a little digging not only did I found out that skin care companies that claim to be skin cancer friendly really are not (and I am talking about really well known names and giants of the industry) but also that spas really do not give any treatments that are even remotely near to the essence of this cause. Is it because the aestheticians in the field have no knowledge of it? Is it because they can’t get any training? Feel free to help me understand and shed some light by emailing me at gabrielle@palmtosole.com. I appreciate any & all constructive comments.

During my search I found the organization responsible for the bulk of all the breast cancer awareness grass root work: the Susan G.Komen Foundation (www.komen.org). Check it out online even if it is just to treat yourself by buying one of their cool t-shirts. Then the skin care company “Lindi Skin” came on to my radar. Check it out: www.lindiskin.com. They are true to their core concept, have removed all the harmful ingredients (paraben, artificial colors, synthetics and more) which are irritant or contra-indicated in women with breast cancer, either because of the disease or because of the treatment modalities.

I started to feel better and happier but it still stung to see that no true spa services for these women are being offered, so with that in mind I awoke the tiger inside of me and tapped into the natural strengths & talents I have been given and demonstrated for 16 years as a former educator and branding director. With the support and input of Dr. Wisser & Dr. Lynch & Rosemary Fox, OR nurse at the Princeton Rejuvenation Institute in Princeton NJ (www.PRImedspa.com), we developed a program called “Women In Healing”. The program includes 60 or 90 minutes of therapy, with a facial addressing patients’ skin needs (hydration, inflammation control, touch therapy & reflexology). Both Dr.’s are well-known for their ground-breaking work in the plastic & reconstructive surgery disciplines, especially with breast cancer patients & survivors, so this program truly is a gem. The rewards for me personally & professionally are enormous and spontaneous. Through our program we have already established a faithful following that will be with our practice for years to come. So, if you are an aesthetician or a med-spa owner and have some questions about “Women in Healing” and would like to implement some part or all of it on your menu, email me at: gabrielle@palmtosole.com

Namaste,

gabrielle

Walk this day in balance and every day

Acne Skin - the logical approach

acne skin - logical approach
Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, so if you have acne you are not alone: 40 to 50 million Americans have acne.

Acne starts as early as 12 years old. Even when it’s mild, it is a medical condition that can result in physical scarring, anxiety and emotional distress. If you have acne, don’t wait to treat it, start treatment as soon as possible to prevent the physical and emotional impact of acne.

What causes acne?

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors:

One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens. These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum.
The lining of the wall of the hair follicle sheds skin cells, which then stick together with the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands. This causes a plug to form below the surface of the skin. This plug cannot be washed away. This process can take days to weeks for a visible lesion to form. Whiteheads and blackheads are the result of this clogging of the pores. The sebum and cell debris together contribute to the growth of bacteria that naturally live in your pores.
Your body's own immune system will naturally attempt to clear the clogged pores by sending in certain specialized cells that invade the follicle to help clean it up. However, in the process, the wall of the follicle may weaken and rupture, emptying the contents of the follicle into the surrounding tissue. When this occurs, swelling or redness can develop around the affected follicle, resulting in the larger bumps or pimples characteristic of acne. These are known as papules and pustules and can sometimes cause scarring.
TIPS:
1. Reduce the inflammation and the excess production of oil (sebum), by hydrating and calming the skin. If you like organic products, use things like tea tree, blue chamomile and aloe. If you like scientific products, use skin ceuticals b5 gel or phyto corrective both hydrating and anti-inflammatory.
2. Do not pick at your skin. Picking is the second worst thing you can do for your acne. Your nails are generally dirty even when they look clean and so picking will create a chain reaction: increase inflammation, heat, tissue damage, and therefore give a great platform to the P. bacteria at the very source of acne to just expand and create more lesions.
3. Avoid drying products, and excessive alcohols wipes over the skin. These will just send the opposite message to your sebaceous glands, think about it, Oh my!! My skin is dry lets produce more oil, and there you have it….more oil, more clogging, more inflammation, more bacteria.
4. Have a strong home care regiment. Even a simple one eventually will work. If your budget is tight you have ways to keep your skin clean, but the most important part of your home care is to deep cleanse, with a terrific cleanser, regular exfoliation (but not excessive) and hydration (water, water, water… I cannot stress this point enough for you how important it is)
5. Get skin treatment from a Skin Care Specialist as frequently as every 2 to 3 weeks on your skin. This professional will drain the acne without creating excess bacteria growth, and uses procedures that deeply exfoliate the skin so it may breathe.
6. Caring is loving, If you have been prescribe a topical, or oral anti bacterial medication, such as: accutane, clindamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline or a topical retinoid, do drink plenty of fluids (water water water), as these medications can have side-effects on the body that are deep and sometimes irreversible.
7. Avoid, heavy foundation. Keep your hair off your face, no picking. If you do a lot of sports and perspire, make sure to take your home care kit with you and go through a full cleansing and hydration step after exercising.
8. Create an emotional de-stress program. You are not alone with your acne, talk about it with your skin care specialist, she/he can help you reach out to groups that will help you understand your emotional roller coaster-ride a bit better and put in coping mechanisms.
9. Practice yoga or deep breathing, or work with a wellness coach to unblock your emotional roots, and ground you in the reality that you are beautiful no matter what.
10. Eat well, and whatever your weakness is and believe you me we all have one, determine it: too much soda, too much caffeine, too much salt…what ever yours is, gently with no pressure, start cutting down the portion intake, go 3/4 then 1/3 then ¼ then…. Is the fear of selling keeping you from converting your prospects into buyers? Here are my top 10 techniques to build confidence and create happy lifetime customers.

The biggest stopper to success in most spas and salons is FEAR. That’s right! Fear to sell. We all have it at one point or another and many among us wonderful & talented Owners, Estheticians, Massage Therapists, Cosmetologists & Healers are simply AFRAID of: success, failure, acceptance, being judged or simply rejected. Worst case: you simply do not care (BOOOOooo)

When you apply my selling TIPS your rewards will be: happy, repeat clients, a happy boss, and a happy you; with a bigger paycheck in the end. It is a win/win situation., so don’t delay and be on the road of success.

1. You heard the saying: “ power is knowledge”. Know as much as possible about what you are selling, but also know about how to connect with your subject, with the person you are selling to.

In a previous message “Manage your spa retail area” I touched a little bit on how to put a new product line on the shelves for that exact purpose. Suppose I come to you and say, "This where I am now with my skin, but this is where I want to be." That measure, or distance between the two, is your opportunity to make the sale, whether it's a product or a spa service.

2. Sell what the client wants to buy, not what you want to sell but NEVER EVER pass on the opportunity to upgrade what you sell if the customer can buy/try something better and DO cross-pollinate your sale with complimentary items.

3. Ask the right questions. Did you know there are four different layers of questions you can ask? All designed to make your client more comfortable. Define what your clients’ needs are.

Example: For a facial, some opening lines could be:

When was your last facial?
What are you looking for with your facial today?
Is this a one time treatment or are you looking for long-term results?, and If so, what are they?
From the answers you will know what your client is looking for. If it is a one time facial, focus on what she can do at home on her own with a home care program, but if she wants regular facials, then give her the best course of action. Be aware that the traditional answer of every 4 to 6 weeks may not apply to her. If you want to discuss more about this, send me a message I will be glad to answer.

4. Believe in your product. Know the features and benefits. But also know when it's not right for a particular situation. People will respect your honesty. Always be TRUE

5. Say the right thing on a continual basis. Stick to the truth, what you've experienced, the facts, and first hand proof.

6. Don't use tired phrases and words that everyone else is using. They don't work anymore. Words and phrases like: “skyrocket, through the roof, amazing, fantastic, incredible, outrageous, ground-breaking, special, time limited, never again, powerful, reveal, exposed, money making, fortune, profit, etc…….” Permanently ban these and other over the top embellishments from your sales vocabulary - and your sales letters - if you want to reach today’s buyers. Today’s buyers have their hype meters on full alert and are quick to say, "bullshit", totally ignoring the rest of your message. In fact, these hype words are so associated with spam that they won't even get past most email filters. In a face-to-face selling situation they are associated with verbal diarrhea; count on buyers having filters for that as well!!

7. Always offer value, services and knowledge, for all clients that walk through your door. They are there because they need your expertise even when they do not know it.

8. Don't train your customers to wait for a sale. Offer good value at a fair price at all times. Above all, offer exemplary customer service. People will always return to someone, or a place, that makes them feel special, that pays real attention to them and that is attentive. Ask what you can give to the situation, not what you can get out of it.

9) People buy on emotion and later use logic to justify a purchase decision. If you appeal to the emotion, the end result, how something will make someone feel, focusing on benefits, or feelings, as opposed to features, your conversion rates will be much higher.

10) Finally, when the time is right, don't be afraid to ask for the order, with a strong call to action. Say, "Can I wrap one of those up for you?" or "Would you like to take one home with you?" On your web site do the same thing, "Click here to have it delivered to your door." or "Click here to download right now."

Follow those 10 top techniques to squash your fear of selling, and you'll be well on your way to more confidence, which, when transferred to your prospect, will make them a happy clients, long term relationship, returning time and again, as a customer for life.

Enjoy! And remember to always have fun.

Skin in Touch - SPF and summer

SPF and sun care this summer

By Gabrielle Perret

Skin cancer statistics have reached alarming levels, with more than 1.2 million new cases being diagnosed each year here in the US. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, kills one person every hour. These statistics may be explained by some of the skin care misconceptions that many people have.

Misconception #1: Higher SPF offers greater protection against Skin Cancer.

SPF only offers protection against UVB light. UVB is the primary cause of sunburn, affecting only the superficial layers of the skin. The light that is MOST carcinogenic to our skin is UVA light. It can penetrate through glass and can only be averted if we ADD something to SPF. The example of such an additive is : Mexoryl (ecamsule) used by several high end sun protection products.

Misconception #2: Layering SPF products yields more protection.

Layering foundation with SPF 10 over a moisturizer with SPF 15 does not equal a total SPF of 25. It's the highest SPF that counts. In this example only the SPF 15 counts.

Misconception#3: Indoor tanning is safe.

Indoor tanning involves UVB and UVA radiation and is just as harmful as being exposed to the bright sun outdoors. One could have a serious UVA carcinogenic effect without any burn!

What to look for

Skin color changes caused by sun exposure are common. The most noticeable sun-induced pigment change is brown spots (solar lentigos). Light-skinned people are particularly prone to freckles. Large freckles, also known as age spots or liver spots, can be seen on the backs of the hands, chest, shoulders, arms, and upper back. UV exposure can also cause small white spots on the legs, backs of the hands, and arms (guttate hypomelanosis) as well as red areas on the sides of the neck.

Moles (nevi) are usually seen in sun-exposed areas. It is normal to acquire new moles from childhood through young adulthood. The sun further stimulates their growth. Most moles are normal; atypical moles, which are seen in non-sun-exposed areas and are larger and more irregular than normal moles, serve as an indicator that the person with these types of moles may be prone to developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

The underdog beware!!!

Pre-cancerous skin changes include red, scaly lesions (especially on the face, ears, and backs of the hands) called actinic keratoses. When on the lip (usually the lower lip), it is called actinic cheilitis. Actinic keratoses are considered pre-malignant lesions because 1 in 100 cases per year will develop into squamous cell carcinoma, another type of skin cancer.

SKIN in TOUCH: Spring in the Skin

In this issue of SKIN in TOUCH we take a closer look at HOW SPRING affects our SKIN and in particular tedious conditions such as Acne.

Spring is upon us. Mother Nature has shed her winter coat to slip into something warmer. During this time of year your skin has to work the hardest. The change in temperature, switching to daylight savings and the sheer hormonal effect spring has on our bodies means that our skin feels stressed and conditions such as acne, dryness or sensitivity may pop up or worsen. What is going on in your anxious epidermis?

CHANGE = ADRENALINE + CORTISOL

Our bodies react to external changes with the age-old fight or flight response. You have one of the best opportunities to create a tighter team by having your staff and managers partake in these changes with minimum chaos. Here are some of my tips: Most of us will place the order, receive the product, ask one of our staff members to unpack, price & log the merchandise in the computer, put it on the shelves and voila! The reality of it is that if you take this route the product will not move and probably collect dust for a while or forever. Why? Because no one really knows how to sell it and nobody thinks it is up to them do so. Already the word selling will raise the hair in the back of the neck of most of your therapists & providers.

The key is to PLAN-PLAN-PLAN ahead. After you select the new product, your staff needs to be trained by the vendor ASAP; for best results do this before the product is placed on the shelves. Treat this as a new product launch/like when you did you first opening. If your vendor does not or can not cooperate take the reigns by using their catalogue/brochure, bring your staff in for a quick training meeting, highlight the key features & benefits of the product, the hot seller, define the market segment and role play. If you don’t have time yourself assign the job to one of your department heads, provided they have any aptitude in training others and in the art of selling.

A fun game to do and that will work with any of your products: take a flip chart and markers, after playing and testing with the product, have each employee come to the board and write three characteristics about it. Once your entire team has expressed themselves, look at the chart and start associating words together; it will give you a story line on how to sell this product. Next post, i will talk about the art of selling. Remember your voice is important to me, share it.
